As you may have seen on my stories last weekend, our family helped out with our church’s spring clean up. Despite it being a lot of work, it was a lot of fun seeing our little community come together to take care the church’s property. In addition to taking pride in how our church’s outdoor space looks, we also take pride in helping make the event environmentally conscious!
To help with our clean up, we used orange Hefty bags designed for the Hefty® EnergyBag® Program”– a new product now available in Omaha. These bags allow you to collect previously non-recycled plastics and convert them into valuable resources! So great! These plastics include things we all use such as straws, chip bags, candy & bar wrappers, and plastic utensils. The church lot was full of these types of items!! We filled several bags full of these previously non-recyclable plastics.
Hefty makes using these bags super easy. You can purchase the bags locally at Menards or HyVee or online at www.heftyenergybag.com. Fill them will all sorts of plastics you use every day. This does not replace your current recycling, and you can continue to recycle your plastic water bottles with your trash/recycling service. I was amazed at how many items can go in these bags – things like toothpaste tubes, pet food bags, and salad & frozen food bags. After filling, place them with your other recyclables for pick up.
Participating in the program was easy not only at our church clean up, but also in our daily life. I keep a bin next to our other trash and recycling bins. One of the items that fill our bags the most at home are the fruit and juice pouches! It is a great feeling to know that, by participating in this innovative program, you are helping to cut back on landfill waste.
Not only is it important for us and our kids to be involved in community activities like this, we find it important to do it in environment conscious ways. I love being able to teach the kids we can now recycle so much more. Not having to throw away straws was a big deal for them!! I encourage you to check out more on the program at www.heftyenergybag.com!
