I am so excited to be sharing with you all my experience with microblading at !! I had this done earlier this summer and wanted to give it enough time to see full results before I shared the details with you. I went to my salon, Kontempo Omaha – this is where I have all of my services done (lashes, hair, coloring). I trust the owner, Kirby, with my hair (aka my life 😉 ), so I know anyone he has working there is the best of the industry!
What is Microblading: Microblading is a type of tattoo where pigment is implanted under your skin with a manual handheld tool instead of a machine. Small, hair like strokes are used to create a tattoo that resembles natural hair or a natural brow. When I first hear of it, my mind went to the old version of tattooed eyebrows, that were solid and looked fake/dramatic. These are very natural looking as they mimic brow hairs.
Where I went: As I mentioned, I went to Kontempo Omaha. The entire team there is fabulous, and the best of their respective fields, and the same applies to Nella who does the microblading! Kirby, the owner, did a ton of research into who he hired. I knew he only hires the best, so I trusted his expertise! This is one thing I would highly recommend before having this done – do your research. Some brow artists do different styles and some look more natural than others. Most will have photo examples online for you to look at. I would HIGHLY recommend Nella – I couldn’t be more happy with my results (more about that to come) and how the appointments went. I also knew, from talking to them prior, that the inks that are used at Kontempo are the best available – which means less fading and less color changing. More information from Kontempo can be found here.
Before picture. I had filled in my brows here. Notice how they are C shaped and far apart.
Why I did it and what I wanted: I have always disliked my brows after over plucking them in high school. I also have never known how to correctly shape my brow. Prior to having this done, I don’t think I realized how much your brow shape influences your face and overall look. Thicker and correctly shaped brows not only make you look younger, but also a more finished look. My old brows were C shaped and went in to far. I wanted more of a natural arch as well as to pull the brows in closer together. I knew I didn’t want the over done, dark brows you sometimes see on people. I have a pretty natural day to day look, and wanted to make sure the brows fit into this.
Outline of eyebrows measured in. This requires several measurements to assure symmetry.
Day of: To start, I discussed with Nella the look I was going for. She outline several things that I hadn’t considered. First, the shape of the brow is limited by your brow bone – she follows this bone and isn’t able to deviate too far from this without creating an un-natural look. Second, she tends to do a little less on the initial tattoo, as you can always add more on your touch up. She started by measuring out my eyebrows. The measurements are very precise and symmetrical. Once the outline of my brows was drawn in (above), I had the chance to discuss how it looked and if there were any changes or thoughts.
One eyebrow partially done! They looked so dark compared to my natural brow color – but I was promised it would fade to my natural color.
Immediately after – brows are dark and covered with an ointment (hence the piece of goop my left brow!)
To begin, my existing eyebrows were plucked to fit this shape – I was amazed at the amount that needed to be plucked! I obv had been shaping mine brows wrong for some time. After plucking the stray hairs, the tattooing started. She uses a small, blade too to make small, brow-hair shaped incisions into the skin. This does hurt a little, but less than I thought it would. After making several incisions, she then applies some local anesthetic. By waiting to apply the anesthetic until after some incisions are made, it allows for better absorption of the medicine and less pain. The whole process took about 3 hours – one hour to draw my brows out and two hours to do that tattoo.
Initial Results: My initial thought was: they are way too dark. I had been warned this would be my initial reaction, and that they fade a lot. But it still freaked me out. It is also weird to see your face with different eyebrows. I had a fundraiser that night and was worried I would be red or swollen. This wasn’t the case, but I did have dark brows for the event 😉
Notice some areas appear to have fallen off and flakes falling off of my brows.
Weeks following: As I was told would happen, the brows began to “flake off”. As you can see in the photos, it appeared as if my eyebrows were falling off. What this is, is dried pigment and scab-like flakes that fall off as the brows heal. In most areas, the tattoo remained, but in some, it appeared to have faded or disappeared. I was assured beforehand that this was normal. The overall healing was very easy. I had to protect them from direct sunlight and apply a Vaseline like ointment to them. As they flaked off, I did use my brow pencil to fill in some areas.
Touch up: After 4 weeks, I went in for my touch up. At this visit, the areas that had faded were filled in. I also decided that I wanted the brows pulled in a little closer together. The touch up lasted a little over an hour and wasn’t as painful as the first – most likely because she didn’t have to pluck as much! The healing process for the touch up was the same as the initial.
Final Results: I could not be more happy with how they have turned out. I love that they are completely natural looking. I wish I had done this sooner – it is LIFE CHANGING. Not only do I not worry about my brows not, I feel like I look like a better version of myself. I also like having the ability to fill them in for a little bit of a bolder look on nights out. I feel like my face looks younger. The outer part of my brow now sits higher and opens up my eyes a little more than before. The color is so natural and, other than wondering how my brows always look so perfect, you would never know I had it done. When I explain it to people, I always say that I am amazed at how natural they look. If you have to pencil your brows in at all, or don’t know if you have a good shape, you likely need this too!!

Thoughts & Recommendations:
- Do your research!! Look at before and afters and specifically look at the brow strokes and shape. Do they look natural?
- Go in knowing they are going to be SUPER DARK when you leave the appointment. This WILL fade.
- You will need a touch up. I anticipate touching mine up again after about a year.
- You WILL NOT regret it. I am so glad I did it. It is an investment, but well worth every penny.
- I HIGHLY recommend Nella at Kontempo!
